Brief Experiences on How I Started Making Money Online

In 1996 I began selling products in the mail via the old-fashioned mail order business. All this changed however, when I came across the internet. The possibility of making money by selling information and products online became clear to me. This trade is a very convenient business for people such as me, with little money, space, and a family to support. Before this epiphany would escape me I purchased a domain name online to begin my business.

The beginning stages of this project was very difficult since I alone had to type and prepare all of my web pages. I had to come up with my own strategy of playing the market. I had to personally handle ever order and every shipping aspect of the trade as well as anything else that might come up.

At first I only had about 20 books to sell in my little endeavor. I sent catalogues, did everything in my power to get clients while trying to balance everything with my life outside the web. My frustration grew and seeds of doubt overcame me. Should I continue attempting this in hope for success? One day I decided to sign up for a book drop-shipping program hoping and relentlessly trying to increase the variety and amount of products my website had to offer and perhaps see if this would increase my volume of sales. I even starting advertising in the pay-per-click search engines. Alas, order began to come, slowly but surely. There were not very many orders, maybe a handful every two weeks but this was exactly what I needed to push me and motivate me to continue my little business.

Out of 700 books that were being offered at QualityBooks.com (mostly from the drop shipping program) just a small amount, approximately three were successful in sales. I devoted more time, money, and effort to market these books and before I knew it I was bringing in an acceptable monthly income!

The next stage in the process was to decrease the cost of my products. Instead of drop shipping the orders, I haggled the prices of my best sellers and was able to market low prices for them. Then I ordered larger numbers to buy them at a wholesale price. The product was being delivered directly to my improvised home office rather than being drop-shipped. I began to run out of space and sacrificed some room in my home for storage, and it turned out to be worth it! When you ship the items yourself, the control of your business increases significantly. I could track my orders properly and tinker with all the aspects of the sales first-hand.

But why sell others books when I could sell books of my own? This does not imply that I actually wrote these books, instead, I bought the reprint rights to legally make them mine. Eventually and entire section of my website and income came from this small bookstore I had created. Every time this books were ordered, the profit margin was nearly 100% considering it cost close to nothing to print and bind them myself.

My little business was bringing my significant yearly income, developed from scratch, it fascinated me. It has grown to be so successful for me that I have even began to feel the temptation to quit my job as a public school science teacher and make this my full time job. An incredible sense of accomplishment has accompanied my through the entire process.
